Bras and Me
I lost weight, and I lost a bra size. With my newly deflated bosom, I need new bras fast.
First, I found one for $6 on sale at Kmart, but there was only one. So I went to my handy-dandy Salvation Army, and I found three, ranging in price from $3 to $6, but these were better brands such as Maidenform and Vanity Fair.
I think the lesson of the story is this: shopping thrift first is a good way to start.
Salvation Army: One Stop Shopping
When you need good stuff…try the Salvation Army Stores. Here in Michigan, we have the nation’s largest Salvation Army. Of course, with our economy, maybe it’s needed.
Yesterday, I needed some things and went to the Rochester Salvation Army, which was the biggest Salvation Army in the nation until the newest one, off Hall Road opened last month.
Anyway, here’s the skinny; I needed bras. I found them; Vanity Fair and Maidenform.
I needed really warm pajama pants. I found those, too for one dollar.
An umbrella? Check
Brush and comb set for my toddler. Of course, and still in packaging.
Halloween decorations for next year? Yep, 80% off. And I got new flip flop (Halloween-themed) also for 80% off.
School Expenses–Not
My son brought home a flier from preschool for a field trip. Here’s the skinny: it’s to an apple orchard 45 minutes away, I’d have to drive him each way, the program last 90 minutes, it’s $9 a person, and I’d have to go.
I say NO.
I don’t feel guilty. I don’t want to drive all that way, and, yes, my son has been to those pick-your-own orchards before, and he didn’t get a lot out of it.
Fatefully, the free community paper, listed that a nearby nature center is having a free donuts, cider, hayride and petting zoo event this Sunday, so that’s where we’ll go.
So another thing I’m not into: buying books from Scholastic. I get all these nice, full color catalogs for books. And, yes, for new books they are reasonably priced. But I don’t do that. I get tons of books for my kids from Value World, where you can buy a big bag for less than four dollars. I also get them at garage sales, too.
So call me a rebel, call me lacking in team spirit.
I call myself thrifty.
harry potter and frugality
I love Harry Potter, but I didn’t buy the last two books because I couldn’t find them used. I did read them via the library, but if you’ve read J.K. Rowling, you know that her books are complicated, and it’s hard rushing them through to get them back before they’re due.
Well, this week I bought book six for $2 at the Salvation Army (book sale) and book seven ($2.50) at Value World.
Lucky me!
New Salvation Army Store in Shelby Township
This just in: the new Salvation Army in Macomb County will be in Shelby Township, the site of the former Schwark Furniture, and it will open in October.
Resale Couture August 29
Like every woman, sometimes I lust after the highpriced and luxurious. Luckily, there is the Salvation Army. I stopped at the Salvation Army, and these were my treasures:
Kate Spade purse for $6.99 worth approximately $195.00
Kenneth Cole Reaction tote bag $8.99 worth at least $88
Ferragamo pumps $3.50, worth $550
Wow!!!! I love the Salvation Army
More Clothes Aug. 22
I went back to Kids Go Round ( a children’s consignment shop) that had a great clearance sale–items for a $1. I bought eighteen items, and with tax, it is $19.08. The total resale (not retail mind you) value of these items was $89.82
