A frugal day

This morning my parents were nice enough to come over so that I could run errands. It was a very frugal three hours. Here it goes.

First stop, Kroger. I needed bread, and I found the bonanza. I bought four loaves of bread for a dollar, the expensive kinds dark rye, flax, and two loaves of cinnamon raisin. I also bouth 10 packages of English muffins at 50 cents each. Two packages or rolls for a quarter each, and one package of donut holes for 50 cents.

On the clearance rack, I bought a can of green beans for .29,l a jar of Welch’s seedless raspberry preserves (and I used a coupon, bringing it down to 1.14). I also bought two chocolate pie crusts for .70 and a pie for 1.99

I also bought a package of vegetarian lunchmeat for $1.29, with a dollar off coupon I had, it brought it down to .29. I also bought a package of boneless ham to be used for lunchmeant on clearance for $1.35 a pound.

On to Walgreens, which had a special of refilling your ink cartridge for $5–and then getting the $5 back on rebate.

Then I bought gas, paying cash so I only had to pay $1.83 a gallon. The gas station was on the same street as Walgreenhs.

Going further down the road, I hit a small strip mall, and hit pay dirt. First, I stopped at ACO and bought the paper plates that were on sale, while I also scouted out their gardening department. I was comparing their prices to those of the Burpee catalog I had just received.

Next, I went to Aldi to buy the instant coffee (we have no room for a coffee maker). They have the cheapest coffee around. I also bought bananas and carrots. Their trash bags were cheaper than ACO’s, so I bought some there. Lastly, in the UPS store, I made copies buying a copy card, so that there were only 6 cents per copy.

On my way back home, I swung by Rite Aid. They had a promotion that if you transferred your prescription, you’d get a $25 gift card. I bought pull ups with those, which also have a rebate. I also bought Pepsi 12-packs that were on sale, using a coupon. We take them along when we travel, so that we don’t buy soft drinks.

And then I went home.

The Ultimate Cheapskate

now, I’m reading (borrowed from the library, of course) , the Ultimate Cheapskate, by Jeff Yeager. There’s some good
information, more general than specific about saving money, but Yeager’s got a wonderful, slightly vulgar style of writing that I’ve really enjoyed.

His website is: www.UltimateCheapskate.com

Dollar Tree Comes Through

It’s that time of the year. Yes, it’s Valentine’s day (named after a real person, a priest who secretly performed marriages) coming upon us. And I have two preschool children. Dollar Tree was fantastic. I bought valentines, valentine favors for the class, puzzles for my son’s reward chart, and other goodies. The other goodies included: L’oreal eyeshadow and Almayu lipsticks (with SPF 15), along with Aquafina (the water company eye cream). I also bought a really cool umbrella with the Big Lots price sticker still attached (it was $3.50), and my favorite a cookbook with a foreward by Camile Cosby (you know, Bill’s wife). It’s one of those huge, glossy, thick deals. The list price was $40, with a Sam’s Club sticker of
$23.88. Did I mention it cost a dollar?

Finally, for the snacker in me, I bought two twelve-packs of mini bag microwave popcorn. Yum-yum.

Decline an Invite to Jewelry Party

I got an email from an acquaintance about a “fun” get together and it was added that it was a Premiere jewelry party. I’m tired of this. Maybe it’s my time of the month. Maybe it’s I’m getting old, but I just wrote back bluntly that I didn’t have the money to buy any jewelry.

Kroger Comes Through

I went to Kroger today b/c of news of a big storm coming up…so I thought I would get some milk.

Well, the new ad was there…and this is what really caught my attention: buy three Kelloggs products and get two gallons of milk FREE. The Kelloggs products were three for $8. AND I had coupons. I got $2 off–so for $6 I got two gallons of milk, a box of Special K and two boxes of Nutrigrain bars.

On a side note, on the clearance table I picked up two bottles of sugar free flavored syrup for coffee. I bought them to head off the craving for fancy coffee out now and then.

Agrusa–meat, veggies and fruits for a discount

This week I bought four pounds of bananas, one pound of strawberries and four pounds of sweet potatoes. The price: $3.16. The strawberries were .75, bananas .38 per pound, and the sweet potatoes were in a four pound bag for $1.

Agrusa does have cheap fruits and vegetables, often seconds but still worth some deals. They also have huge quanities of produce on clearance.

The meat is good quality and often they have sales…this weak ground pork is a little over $1 per pound.

Here’s a link to their Sterling Heights store: http://local.yahoo.com/info-16260355-agrusa-meat-fruit-ranch-sterling-heights

There is also an Agrusa in Troy—Long Lake/Rochester

Salvation Army Comes Through

I bought some furniture from the Salvation Army–a rolldown desk and a computer desk. We had been looking at some similar desks…and there they were at the Salvation Army.I paid a total of $102 for both of them—and that was after I spun the wheel of discount, and I got an 18% discount.

Here’s a similar to desk to one that I bought/

Where Do You Find Value World Coupons

Occasionally people ask me about where Value World Coupons can be found. The answer? The newspaper. Sometimes in the Detroit News/Free Press, but more often in The Metro Times. Coupons are found irregularly.
