Costco

This weekend, my family and I went to Costco. It was a special occasion, since we don’t have a membership, but the local newspaper had a coupon for one free shopping pass.

So we went, we saw, and were unimpressed.

Costco is big, very big. Free samples abounded, which was the best part, especially for the kids. Greek yogurt, dried blueberries, and small cartons of chocolate organic milk were a few of the highlights of the snacks available for nothing.

But hubby and I quickly realized that Costco wasn’t for the likes of us. The inventory seemed skewed to the upper class. Burberry and Coach handbags, True Religion jeans and $300 bottles of wine were common examples of what Costco carried.

True, there were some ordinary items, but often they were not really bargains. For example, a big box of Kirkland diapers: $37. Cost of Target diapers for the same amount: $27. Similar unsavings were found on other items.

In the end, we left stuffed with free samples and satisfaction. Satisfaction that we weren’t Costco customers, and that was OK with us.

Other comments re Costco, even ones that disagree with mine, are welcome.

Speech Therapy on the Cheap

My daughter is almost three-and-a-half….and she almost doesn’t talk. Words come out of her slowly, grudgingly, as if they personally wronged her.

So she’s in Early On, and she gets free speech therapy in her special ed preschool. But because she’s so unverbal, it had been recommended that she get private speech therapy at a hospital too. Luckily, our insurance pays for 60 visits per calendar year, but she needs more than that.

When I spoke of my frustration with the therapist, she said she will give me an application that when my insurance runs out, I can get therapy sessions for half-off. What a blessing. I hope it works.

Does other have any insight/experience getting thrapy for special needs children?

Kroger Bargains

My local Kroger is doing a radical thing…reducing the price on dented canned goods. The workers seem to be a bit clumsy, and that’s all to the good. That means that there are a lot of canned goods half-off near the bottle return.

The prices are especially good for Kroger brands, but even the name brand prices aren’t that bad.  An extra bonus is that you can use coupons on the stuff. For example, I bought three cans of Chef Boyardee for .49 each, with a coupon that had .35 off for three cans. Since Kroger doubles their coupons, I paid a total of .80 (about .26 a can) for my Spaghetti-os.

Halloween Savings

I love Halloween. I love the spookiness, I love the pumpkins, I love costumes, and…I love candy.

But you know what I really love…the day after Halloween, especially at Walgreens, where all the Halloween stuff is 75% off. Of course, I bought candy and decorations for next year. I bought spooky cds, not for Halloween, but because I love spooky music. I bought some candles that I can use anytime and some extra candy for when I get a chocolate attack.

What else do people love about the day after Halloween?

Bras and Me

I lost weight, and I lost a bra size. With my newly deflated bosom, I need new bras fast.

First, I found one for $6 on sale at Kmart, but there was only one. So I went to my handy-dandy Salvation Army, and I found three, ranging in price from $3 to $6, but these were better brands such as Maidenform and Vanity Fair.

I think the lesson of the story is this: shopping thrift first is a good way to start.

Salvation Army: One Stop Shopping

When you need good stuff…try the Salvation Army Stores.  Here in Michigan, we have the nation’s largest Salvation Army. Of course, with our economy, maybe it’s needed.

Yesterday, I needed some things and went to the Rochester Salvation Army, which was the biggest Salvation Army in the nation until the newest one, off Hall Road opened last month.

Anyway, here’s the skinny; I needed bras. I found them; Vanity Fair and Maidenform.

I needed really warm pajama pants. I found those, too for one dollar.

An umbrella? Check

Brush and comb set for my toddler. Of course, and still in packaging.

Halloween decorations for next year? Yep, 80% off. And I got new flip flop (Halloween-themed) also for 80% off.
