Saturday and Salvation Army

My daughter has special needs…so I was delighted to find some things she could use at Salvation Army. A trampoline in new condition…$20 (list price $60). DVDs designed to help children talk for $3.99. She’s actually talked at the DVDs and I am so excited, because she rarely talks. It’s very expensive to rear a special needs child, so any little bit helps!

Frugal Friday

Went to Kroger and had a blow-out time. They were getting rid of their bakery goodies…up to 90% off. This is the stuff that they bake at the store, and it was GOOD. Bought a dozen of bagels for .99. Coffee cake .50, cream cake $1, apple pie $1.99, and my favorite Hershey’s brownies with cream cheese icing for a dollar.

The savings didn’t end there, I bought two loaves of bread for .40 (from an outside bakery), and a gallon of organic milk for $2. Their regular milk due Sept. 29 was .99 a half gallon. Sweet!

I also bought chicken chunks 75% and bottles of mustard for .35 each. I also bought produce on sale, so that was a lot of fun.

I had to go to the community center and I found that they have a book shelf of free books! Great, new books, so I got an armful.

Lots of frugal fun.

harry potter and frugality

I love Harry Potter, but I didn’t buy the last two books because I couldn’t find them used. I did read them via the library, but if you’ve read J.K. Rowling, you know that her books are complicated, and it’s hard rushing them through to get them back before they’re due.

Well, this week I bought book six for $2 at the Salvation Army (book sale) and book seven ($2.50) at Value World.

Lucky me!

Junk Man

My carpet sweeper died. So sad. I had to buy a new one. Really sad. For $25. Now, I’m crying.

Anyway, I put it out…and three minutes later…it’s gone…gone to be reincarnated.

Nothing wrong with that, but I was talking with my parents, and guess what, and one time, the junk man would come out and BUY your scrap.

I have no problem with this curb side recycling, but yes, it would be nice to get a little cash out of it.

New Salvation Army Store Sept. 6

Today, I went to the grand opening of the new Salvation Army Store in Utica.

Well, I went, I shopped, I bought on opening day.

First of all, it’s big. Very big. It’s the biggest Salvation Army Store in the nation. The previous owner of that title, I think, is the Salvation Army in Rochester Hills.

The layout reminds of a Marshall’s or a TJ Maxx. Very organized, with nice displays.

There was a LOT of new merchandise.  Some of it was clothes, including some beautiful black skirts, but most of it was paper goods and what retailers call health and beauty aids.

People were buying lots of the paper goods and health and beauty aids. I bought a 500 pack of napkins for . 99I didn’t see people buying much of anything else. Of course, the store was so crowded that it was hard to see anything else. Like the prices, for instance.

The book section was terrific both in design and in contents, but, again, I couldn’t see the prices. Near the book section were vending machines, which are popular in the new Salvation Army stores.

As always for their opening, there was a multidude of free refreshments, hot dogs, donuts, chips, coffee and punch, all of which were very good.

Kroger Bargains

I do most of my shopping at Kroger. Why? Two words: manager’s specials. Using that, the last few weeks have really been grocery heaven. My deals of this time have been numerous: the boxes of organic cereal for .99, a dozen bages .99, half-gallons of milk .25 are just to name a few. I generally make most of my meals out of what’s on sale, what’s on special and what’s in the pantry. And I’m doing fine.

Resale Couture August 29

Like every woman, sometimes I lust after the highpriced and luxurious. Luckily, there is the Salvation Army. I stopped at the Salvation Army, and these were my treasures:

Kate Spade purse for $6.99 worth approximately $195.00

Kenneth Cole Reaction tote bag $8.99 worth at least $88

Ferragamo pumps $3.50, worth $550

Wow!!!! I love the Salvation Army

Salvation Army Decor and the State Fair Aug. 23

Today, I went to the Salvation Army. Frames/framed art were half-off!!! Since the theme of our house is gold, I picked some really nice framed art with gold frames—for $13. One of the artworks I bought for the frame. I’ll just switch out the art work.

Later on, we all went to the Michigan State Fair. I bought the tickets online early for some savings. Since I have two small children, we were unable to avoid buying food, but at least we stuck to hot dogs the cheapest food there is. (We brought our own bottled water).

On a side note, U.S. Grant’s house is on the fairgrounds. Most people, even those from Michigan, don’t know about this. Why not? Because it was moved more than 70 years ago from its original area (near the old Tigers Stadium). Because of this, the house gets no funding. The house is more than 150 years old, and it’s a wooden farmhouse, which looks pretty well-preserved. There’s a sign in front ot it.
