June 27

Took my daughter to a city park, then went to TCBY b/c we had free yogurt coupons. After that, my little girl and I went to Whole Foods. I’d never been there before. It was very nice, very upscale. Most of the prices were a little…high, but she pigged out on the abundant free samples. I also discovered that the bulk section–with the beans and grains–had some bargains.

Then I took my son out. We went to Walgreen’s b/c I got a $5 off coupon. We bought the cereal that was on sale, maximizing our savings with a manufacturer’s coupon. With that deal, I got a $2 coupon off my next purchase, which I used a minute later to buy more cereal with another manufacturer’s coupon.

Nicely dressed–Environmentally friendly

Laundry is my bugabear right now. So I did some and put away some. Right now, I’m washing stuff I bought second hand. I keep thinking how amazing deals are at garage sales, etc. We’re all very nicely dressed and for very cheaply, too. Like less than a dollar per piece of clothing. It’s hard to resist that. And it’s environmentally friendly.

I also went to Aldi and bought some bananas, b/c they generally have the cheapest in town. While I was there, I noticed that they had bouquets for .99 on clearance. I bought a half-dozen roses of the most delicate pink hue, with baby’s breath.

Wednesday and the Pickings are Easy

Today was the day to go picking.

So we piled in to go to Blake Orchards www.blakefarms.com. Once we got there, no thanks to mapquest, I was pleasantly surprised by the prices and the quality. We did the pick your own stawberry thing and that was fun, although my kids were more puzzled than pleased. They thought the point was to squash the berries, not pick them, but thankfully we weren’t charged for that.

I’m going to look into freezing the berries, and see if that makes economic sense. I want to make a pie from the frozen pie crust I got on clearance when Ol’ Farmer Jack was closing last year.

We left a little early. My kids got whiny and thirsty and we had to go back to the main building to buy water. That’s where you pay, too, so we just left.

On a sad note, I had to pay $1.25 for a bottle of water. I was going to ACO hardware, anyway, and low and behold they had a 15- pack of water for $1.99. Wow!

So I went to ACO and loaded up on sale items.

Tuesday with Walgreen

Today, I went to Walgreen. Cereal was on sale 3 for $7. Well, that’s not very remarkable, but what’s more remarkable is after you purchase the cereal, you get a $2 coupon off for the next order.  Plus, I had a coupon for the cereal, so that made it, really 3 for  $4, counting the two dollars off the next purchase. I used the $2 coupon to help buy some milk that was also on sale. I also saw some plastic shoeboxes on sale for.75 each (cheaper than the dollar store–natch), so I got some of those, too.

Monday Moaning June 22

I’m still getting over the flu, so I just put away some laundry. I did cook up the bargain green beans I bought Sunday. And I cooked up some more spaghetti using the sausage I got on clearance. So I guess it was a pretty good day.

Sunday, Sickly Sunday

No one made it to church today. My son’s almost back to normal. I did run out in the afternoon. I got a free coffee at a new coffee shop’s grand opening. I got a coupon for a free Thomas Tank Engine, but Toys R Us were out of them.

On my way back, I stopped at the produce market. For $4.70, I bought: four pounds of green beans, three pounds of bananas, two pounds of red seedless grapes, one pound of plums, and five pounds of Idaho potatoes.

The trick: everything but the potatoes was on the reduced rack.

Second trick: small produce markets often have deals. Yes, often the produce is seconds, but at those prices how can you argue?

June 21

On my way back from a doctor’s appointment (nothing serious), I saw a rummage sale. So, of course, I stopped in. I bought some higher-end brands (Geoffrey Beene, Eddie Bauer) clothes for my husband and a never-out-of-the-box. Total bill: $10.

I also stopped at the Salvation Army on the way back. Today was the last day of kids’ week, when everything related to kids is half-off. I scored some diapers–Pampers, a box of 88 went for $4.95, a Little Tykes train for $2 and a Jones New York jacket that fits me perfectly for $14–Ok, that was a bit of splurge, but when something fits perfectly….

6/19–mystery shopping

Today, I did one of the mystery shops. It was nice to get out of the house…and make some money besides-how cool is that? Maybe I’ll get more into mystery shopping.

By the way, a good website about mystery shopping is www.volition.com

6/18–Fair

On Monday, my kid and I went to a community fair. It was great and FREE. Free food, free ice cream, free games with prizes, free goody bag for the kids. To get in, I had to register to get in.

Well, today, I got a phone call. We won a door prize. I had to go to an insurance office, and I was scared that I would have to endure a high-pressure sales talk. IAnd when I went there, the receptionist just handed me the gift, which was from a place called the Young Rembrandts, which I guess is some sort of art school for kids. In a plastic bucket, markers, colored pencils and a sheaf of construction paper sat.

I found out about the fair from the local free paper. Which goes to show: that not only the best things in life are not only free, but also found free.

6/17

Today, I got a phone call, asking me to do three mystery shops. It was a company that I had signed up a long time ago, but I guess they needed some one badly, because they called me and I had never worked as a mystery shopper before. It paid well, so I said yes. Another adventure…in frugality.
